In Shuruppak, a very old city "before the flood," a school of scribes drew up its documents in a still rudimentary way. The scribe often only notes the root of the word, leaving the reader to fill in the missing elements. Hence the difficulty for modern readers to interpret certain texts. From this period we have administrative texts, contracts, lists of words, and the first flourishing of Sumerian literature.
This tablet is the bill of sale of a house and a male slave. The scribe noted the area equivalent to 54 sqm, and then listed the six guaranteeing witnesses of the contract. The word witness is a good example of the language and writing of the Sumerians of that time. It is written by three signs:
1. LÚ: "man", whose silhouette is recognizable
2. KI: "earth", represented as a diamond-shaped parcel.
3. INIM: "word": this abstract notion has been expressed by the image of the head already geometric shapes, with his beard that draws attention to the mouth and words that come out.
