New Kingdom, 2nd Theban period, reign of Rameses II
With his hands wisely placed on his knees, a baboon monkey is perched on a small base. It would be sacrilegious to confuse him with a pet. This monkey is one of the forms of the god Thoth, patron saint of the scribes. This is what the offering table at the bottom of his pedestal reminds us of and the attitude of the scribe, humbly sitting at his feet.
He unrolls a papyrus inscribed on his knees and bends his head as a sign of devotion; the inscription that runs all around this small group consists of invocations to Thoth, "Master of divine words", for the benefit of the scribe, whose titles are listed. He is a very high-ranking figure, named Nebmeroutef, priest, archivist and royal scribe with the rank of minister.
Amenhetep III, his sovereign, granted him the insignia of being represented at his side on the walls of the Soleb temple.
