ORIGINAL ARTIFACT HISTORY:
The La Esperanza monument is discoidal stone, diameter 55 cm thickness 14 cm.
carved face of a circular band containing 12 glyphs, including the Long Count date 9.7.17.12.14 (A.D. 591).
glyph band surrounds central area approx 34 cm. in diameter.

Central panel, a ball player in half-kneeling position, propelling large ball with right hip with his outstretched left hand against a glyphic panel.
wears a characteristic Classic Maya ball game costume, short fabric hip cloth covered by a large protective skirt of deer hide held by a protective girdle of basketry and a
three-ribbed wooden ball deflector at upper midriff level.

The La Esperanza player's left arm appears to be covered by cotton or animal fur padding.
On his forehead is a cloth wrap, marking him as one of the "Headband Gods" or "Headband Twins"

jaguar diagnostic, large spotted tail that curls from the top of the headdress, may relate to his identity as GIii. front of the headdress is a shell, possibly a spondylus or conch in cross-section

strikes a ball inscribed with a glyph consists of a youthful male head in profile wearing a caplike element edged with circlets or beads.

hieroglyphic begins above the ball player's head with Glyph and Long Count date of 9.7.17.12.14
